Weanlings

SCROLL DOWN TO PHOTO LINKS OF OUR WEANLINGS
Our foals are usually born between November and January, and are weaned at 6-8 months, depending on the season and the condition of their pregnant dams. Our location gives us a 'wet' season usually around December to March, give or take a month. Our breeding program is linked to our seasons, rather than to an industry standard.
We wean around August, it then takes 8 weeks or so to get through the weaning process, then we only have to feed them for about 6 weeks until the first storms. Our total feed time averages 12-14 weeks. Foals that are 'traditionally' born in September, are weaned in April, meaning that we would then have to feed those Weanlings for at least 32 weeks!
Our more natural program also avoids the need to winter rug, and the foals are shedding their own coats by weaning time anyway. It also gives us the upper hand on mare fertility, you can find out more about this in our Broodmares section.
We wean in social groups of 5-15, and they are left unhandled for 10-14 days to allow them to get over the loss of their dams and find their own social status amongst their friends. Once they have overcome their stressed emotions, are eating well and appear socially content, then handling begins.
Some have been handled as foals, so their process is simplified, but the unhandled ones take quite some more time. We like to work them in a roundpen using our own mixture of 'natural' horsemanship to encourage a trust situation. They are then introduced to a rope, a halter, leading, tying up, feet trims, rugging, bathing and loading. The end result is a respectful Weanling, that can be let go to grow up in a paddock, and then be presented to the breaker with a good memory of a solid foundation.
A select few of the Weanlings here are not for sale, you will identify them as they have no price tag. If you check out the 'For Sale - Young Horses' section you can peruse through the ones that are. Most of our horses are sold as Weanlings and Yearlings, so we do encourage you to contact us if any should interest you, as they have not been advertised anywhere prior to this website being opened on 7/11/09, and they could sell very quickly.
In the pedigrees, any underlined names or numbers will give you a direct link to that horse on their Society Website.
