We try to have our yearlings respectful as weanlings and pretty much ready to break in other than the growth factor, by the time they have finished their weaning process. We don't molly cottle them, so they don't get rude and cheeky. Once they have been well handled and the season is suitable - which is usually about as they are rising 1yo, they go into a big paddock and pretty much get left alone. They get supplemented, and wormed/ticked regularly, but otherwise are left to grow up in the paddock.
We love it when random horse breakers ring us, complimenting us on how easy a Rhondhu horse was to 'break in' for their client. Seriously well handled wearlings make good attituded yearlings, and seriously good ridden 2yos.
